First anniversary of Talayotic Menorca as a World Heritage Site with two concerts by Marco Mezquida

cartell talaiotThe Consell Insular de Menorca and the Talayotic Menorca Agency are organising two concerts by Menorcan musician Marco Mezquida to celebrate the first anniversary of Menorca's designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 18 September 2023. The Menorcan artist will present for the first time on our island Talaiot, his first composition for piano and symphony orchestra, inspired by this Talayotic monument. It will be performed on September 28 at the Teatre des Born in Ciutadella (8 pm) and on September 29 at the Teatre Principal de Maó (8 pm). Mezquida will be accompanied by the Orquestra Simfònica de les Illes Balears (OSIB), with Pablo Mielgo as musical director.

The presentation of these two concerts took place this morning, August 13, in the site of Trepucó (Maó), in the presence of Joan Pons Torres, president of the Talayotic Menorca Agency and conseller of Cultural Affairs, Education, Youth and Sports; Pedro Vidal, regional secretary of Cultural Affairs and Sports; Marco Mezquida, performer and composer; Josep Marquès, director-manager of the Teatre des Born; and Nieves Portas, director-manager of the Teatre Principal de Maó.

Tickets will be available at the usual sales channels of each theatre from August 28. The concert on September 29 at the Teatre Principal de Maó will be broadcast live and free of charge on the Consell Insular de Menorca's YouTube channel.

Conseller Pons Torres expressed his satisfaction: "The Talayotic Menorca Agency and the Consell Insular de Menorca want to share with all Menorcans the excitement of celebrating the first anniversary of the declaration of Talayotic Menorca as a world heritage site, and that is why we have organised these two concerts by Marco Mezquida with the OSIB. We believe that this declaration has been a historic milestone for all Menorcans and that it should be celebrated with a first class composer such as Mezquida. As we want to share it with all Menorcans, the concert on the 29th at the Teatre Principal will also be broadcast live and free of charge on the Consell's YouTube channel".

Mezquida (Menorca, 1987) has defined his composition Talaiot with these words: "romantic, impressionist, Iberian, minimalist music with touches of jazz". This concert is his debut in symphonic composition. The Menorcan musician has developed a dazzling musical career - championed by his eclecticism and versatility - which has led him to present his own musical projects in more than 40 countries on four continents.

During the presentation in Trepucó, Mezquida said that it was a great honour to perform these two concerts: "When I did this composition we still didn't have the good news, it's something I did as a tribute and out of love for these monuments and this history. I am happy that it can be a celebration, as this piece is, a great celebration".

The Menorcan musician has already recorded 95 albums (27 as leader and/or co-leader of his own projects) and has received more than twenty awards for his musical, recording and concert activity. These are figures that already point to the artist as one of the most brilliant and promising appearances on the Spanish music scene.
