Alicia Utiyama, winner of Becatalaiotica 2024

becatalaiotica 2024 winnerThe artist Alicia Utiyama has been announced as the winner of Becatalaiotica 2024 with her installation "Todo lo vivido es irrecuperable." The announcement was made during the award ceremony for the eighth edition of the competition, held today, November 30, in Trepucó. Utiyama received the prize from Jaume Reurer, the Island’s Director of Cultural Affairs, accompanied by Becatalaiotica organizers Maria Melià and Biel Nadal.

The artist was awarded a €2,000 grant, the prize for this competition organized by the Associació d'Amics del Museu de Menorca with the support of the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Consell Insular de Menorca/Talayotic Menorca Agency and the collaboration of the Fundació Illes Balears. Utiyama (Brazil, 1999) created a kinetic installation in the site of Torrellafuda, inviting reflection on the nostalgia for unlived realities and the bonds that unite different cultures.

This year, five groundbreaking proposals from various artistic disciplines were submitted. Eva Antelo (Santiago de Compostela, 1997), a multidisciplinary artist, presented an audiovisual performance accompanied by Joana Pons and Ses Guitarres at Talatí de Dalt. Maria Paz Serra (Argentina, 1995), a creative director, created a short audiovisual piece reflecting on the word "taula" and its meaning, which she projected onto the taula at Torralba d'en Salort.

Neus Montané (Barcelona, 2000), a professional dancer and student of physical theater, transformed the songs of three bird species native to Menorca into a dance performance at Torre d'en Galmés. Claudia Nieva (Terrassa, 2002), a physical theater student, staged a play depicting Menorca’s history through physical theater in the settlement of Trepucó.

Becatalaiotica is a cultural project focused in highlighting Menorca’s landscape as a source of inspiration and exploring new ways to experience it. The competition is open to individuals aged 18 to 28 who are studying or planning to pursue any kind of studies. The goal is to create free, innovative, and original events or activities in various sites of Talayotic Menorca. Attendees of the events evaluate and vote on the proposals, with the winner receiving a €2,000 scholarship.
