Conference: Chillida in Menorca: Contemporary Art and Prehistory

Kosme de Barañano, the leading expert in Eduardo Chillida’s work, will give a talk on the artist’s practice, including his connection to Menorca and some prehistoric influences in his work. The talk will be accompanied by a presentation of the symbolic worldview of Talayotic monuments in Menorca and links to contemporary art by Antoni Ferrer, director of the Talayotic Menorca Agency.

The event will be presented by Juan Elorduy, painter and cultural manager who organized Chillida’s first exhibition in Menorca in 1995 as then director of Sala Cultural Sa Nostra.

About Kosme de Barañano
Kosme de Barañano (Bilbao, 1952) is a professor, author and curator considered as the world’s expert in Eduardo Chillida’s work. He is currently the Director of the Department of Methodology of Art History and Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Altea, University UMH. De Barañano is member of several museum boards and has held positions such as the subdirector of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and executive director of IVAM. He has authored numerous books on Chillida and other artists, and has curated exhibitions at institutions such as the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Malborough International and Museum Würth among many others. Kosme de Barañano visited Menorca alongside Chillida on several occasions during the summers the artist spent on the island.

About Antoni Ferrer
Antoni Ferrer (Ciutadella de Menorca, 1978) is an art historian and archaeologist specialised in the prehistory and protohistory of the Balearic Islands, who has co-directed many excavation projects and co-authored several articles on the symbolic aspects of Talayotic constructions and objects. Ferrer was the technical director of the ‘Talayotic Menorca’ candidacy as World Heritage, which was granted by UNESCO in 2023. He is currently the director of the Talayotic Menorca Agency.

About Juan Elorduy
Juan Elorduy (Bilbao, 1954) is a painter and cultural manager. He has had eleven solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous group exhibitions. Elorduy directed the exhibition rooms of 'Sa Nostra' in Menorca for more than twenty years and has published numerous texts, articles and books on art and heritage. He currently paints and gives courses on art and culture at the Sant Lluis Town Hall and the Ateneu de Maó.
