The celebration of the first anniversary of Talayotic Menorca as a Unesco World Heritage Site brought together more than 120 people at the Talayotic settlement of Trepucó (Maó). Led by the president of the Consell Insular de Menorca, Adolfo Vilafranca, the entire government team attended the celebration. The event was also attended by numerous political representatives from all the municipalities of Menorca, as well as representatives of all the political parties.
In his speech, Vilafranca said: ‘Unesco's recognition reaffirms our history, landscape and culture. During this year we have promoted three areas: research, dissemination and conservation. We believe that it is now time to manage, conserve and disseminate our World Heritage to new generations through projects such as the future Interpretation Centre of Talayotic Menorca. This is one of the main projects of the mandate. It will be located in the Plaza de la Catedral, in the old Ca l'Avi hardware store, and will be the headquarters of Talayotic Menorca’.
Led by the Conseller for Cultural Affairs, Joan Pons Torres, the evening began with a talk by Dr. Manuel Calvo, Professor of Prehistory at the UIB, on the challenges facing Talayotic Menorca one year after its nomination.
It continued with a speech by the president of the Consell Insular de Menorca and the projection of the mapping ‘Entre el cel i la mar’ (Between the sky and the sea). The event ended with a tasting of Talaiòtica beer with the archaeologist Montserrat Anglada and the master brewer Roger Vila.
