The Consell Insular de Menorca organizes the workshop of the Alliance of Cultural Landscapes and Related World Heritage Sites

The Consell Insular de Menorca will host the upcoming Workshop of the Alliance of Cultural Landscapes and Related World Heritage Sites, which will take place on the island from March 10 to 12. Under the title "Communicating World Heritage Sites: Interpretative and Educational Resources to Connect with Society," the event will bring together experts in heritage, communication, and education to discuss the best strategies for conveying the value of sites inscribed on the World Heritage List.

This gathering, which combines theoretical sessions with field visits, aims to share experiences from initiatives designed to strengthen the connection between heritage and society through tools and methodologies that facilitate its interpretation and understanding by the public. Attendees will participate in conferences on March 11 at the headquarters of the Numa Foundation (Ciutadella), combined with visits to representative sites in Menorca, such as the Talayotic settlement of Trepucó, the Naveta des Tudons, Torre d’en Galmés, the Menorca Museum, and the Ciutadella Museum-Can Saura.

The program will feature renowned specialists in the fields of heritage and communication, who will share their knowledge and experiences in various sessions. Among them, Pablo Jiménez Díaz, from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, will address different approaches to World Heritage communication; Celia Martínez Yáñez, from ICOMOS International, will discuss regulation and authenticity in heritage interpretation; and Mariola Andonegui, from the San Millán de la Cogolla Foundation, will present a benchmark heritage education program.

Additionally, several case studies on heritage dissemination will be presented, such as the experience of the Madinat al-Zahra Archaeological Complex, the educational project of the Serra de Tramuntana, and the Talayotic Menorca initiatives aimed at the local community.

A workshop open to the public

One of the main novelties of this edition is that attendance is open to the general public, allowing anyone interested in heritage dissemination to join the activities. Registration costs 40 euros and includes access to all conferences and scheduled visits, as well as lunch on March 11.

The conseller for Cultural Affairs, Youth, and Sports and President of the Talayotic Menorca Agency, Joan Pons Torres, highlighted the importance of this opening to the public: “This is the first time that this workshop is made accessible to everyone, and this represents a unique opportunity for the people of Menorca and the island’s cultural entities to learn firsthand about how World Heritage communication and dissemination work. From the Consell Insular, we invite everyone to participate and be part of this space for knowledge and experience exchange.”

Those interested in attending can register via email at info@menorcatalayotica.info until March 6 or contact the Talayotic Menorca Agency (971 36 07 93) for more information.

About the Alliance

The Alliance, headquartered and with a General Secretariat in Aranjuez, is an association that brings together 13 landscapes and sites included in the UNESCO World Heritage List from Spain, Portugal, and Andorra. It has the support and recognition of the Spanish Ministry of Cultural Affairs and the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and is part of the European Network of World Heritage Site Associations.

Its objective is to foster the exchange of experiences and best practices in the management, conservation, and dissemination of these sites, promoting innovative approaches and collaborative strategies between different territories. In the past 12 months, the Alliance has incorporated new sites related to World Heritage, such as Mudejar Architecture of Aragon, the Vizcaya Suspension Bridge, Talayotic Menorca, and the Dolmens of Antequera.

Since its creation, the Alliance has actively worked on organizing meetings, workshops, and discussion forums to strengthen knowledge and cooperation around heritage protection and dissemination. This workshop in Menorca is part of its initiatives to improve the communication of heritage values and their connection with society.
