Applications open for Menorca’s 2025 historical heritage research and conservation grants

Consell Insular de Menorca has opened the call for applications for grants aimed at supporting actions that enhance the knowledge, safeguarding, and dissemination of historical heritage, including the intangible cultural heritage of Menorca. The six lines of grants amount to a total of 430,000 euros, representing a 36.5% increase compared to 2024. This rise is due to the budget allocation for archaeological and palaeontological interventions, which increases from 130,000 to 244,000 euros.

The six lines of grants have the following objectives and purposes:

Line 1. Restoration of historical heritage assets
The objective of these grants is to promote the restoration and rehabilitation of movable and immovable assets that form part of Menorca’s historical heritage.

The purpose is to prevent their disappearance and contribute to their improved conservation. In the case of assets that do not yet have official recognition as Cultural Interest Assets (BIC) or are not catalogued, the aim is to encourage such designation and enrich the BIC Register or the Island Catalogue of Historical Heritage when the asset is deemed relevant or significant enough to warrant special protection.

Line 2. Archaeological and palaeontological interventions
These grants aim to provide financial support for archaeological and palaeontological interventions on sites within Menorca and for associated laboratory work. Laboratory work relating to completed interventions that are still within the submission deadline for the scientific report is also eligible. However, work on excavation reports that are no longer part of ongoing excavations and whose submission deadline has expired will not be considered under this line.

The purpose is to broaden and promote research into historical periods requiring archaeological methodology, thereby enriching the body of knowledge and the dissemination of its value.

Line 3. Historical research
These grants aim to finance research programmes and improvements in the management of heritage assets of a historical, artistic, architectural, archaeological, palaeontological, military-historical, industrial-historical, anthropological or ethnological nature.

The purpose is to improve the understanding of Menorca’s past and contribute to the protection, management and dissemination of its heritage, including intangible cultural heritage.

Line 4. Scientific publications
These grants are intended to fund the publication and editing of results from already completed research projects in the above-mentioned fields, as well as the preparation of research outputs for publication.

The aim is to disseminate and give academic visibility—both nationally and internationally—to research projects on the past of Menorca, particularly its prehistory and protohistory, within the context of the Talayotic Menorca World Heritage candidacy, as well as its intangible cultural heritage.

Line 5. Organisation and implementation of conferences and dissemination activities
These grants support the organisation of conferences and dissemination activities on historical, artistic, architectural, archaeological, palaeontological, military-historical, industrial-historical, anthropological or ethnological topics, carried out within the calendar year in which the call is active.

The aim is to disseminate and share new knowledge about Menorca’s past, especially its prehistory and protohistory, in connection with the Menorca Talayótica World Heritage candidacy.

Line 6. Safeguarding, knowledge and dissemination of intangible cultural heritage
The objective of these grants is to support actions organised by the bearers of intangible cultural heritage—namely, communities, groups, entities or individuals—who work towards the safeguarding of one or more specific expressions of Menorca’s intangible cultural heritage, particularly those at risk.

The aim is to ensure generational transmission of the knowledge and techniques associated with Menorca’s intangible cultural heritage (ICH), especially those expressions most at risk of disappearing.

Maximum grant amounts per application and call:
Line 1. Restorations: €10,000
Line 2. Interventions: €18,000
Line 3. Research: €5,500 per grant
Line 4. Publications: €5,000 for monographs or compilations, €1,500 for articles in scientific journals
Line 5. Conferences and dissemination activities: €5,000
Line 6. Safeguarding, knowledge and dissemination of ICH: €2,500

The deadline for submitting applications is 30 calendar days from the day following publication in the Butlletí Oficial de les Illes Balears.
