What is World Heritage?

Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. The properties that make up world heritage belong to the people of the world and it is the international community as a whole that is responsible for their safeguarding.

In 1972, every member nation of UNESCO signed the World Heritage Convention, as a way of formally recognising heritage considered of “outstanding universal value”, meaning, those properties whose cultural and/or natural significance is so exceptional that they transcend national boundaries and must be conserved for present and future generations of all humanity.

Taking into consideration such outstanding values and attributes, Talayotic Menorca joins this list of World Heritage Sites, in representation of the odyssey of a singular insular culture trapped between heaven and the sea. The landscapes and prehistoric monuments associated with Menorca constitute an outstanding legacy that we are in fact safeguarding for present and future generations.

Its addition to this list brings to light the wealth of our heritage and it's a clear demonstration of the commitment of both local authorities and the general population with regard to its conservation.
